Gates Award for Global Health 2003 Winner: Brazilian National AIDS Program NAP

Access to care prevents mortality and hospitalisation

Back in 1996 Brazil took the bold step of offering antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) to its citizens for free. It estimates that this caused a significant slowdown in mortality, secondary infection and hospitalization costs. The success of the program led to the National AIDS Program winning the Gates Award for Global Health in 2003. At the recent Gates Award Winners' symposium Global Health TV spoke with Mauro Teixeira and asked what the program could teach other countries facing similar situations.
