World Health Assembly opens

Health experts are gathering to discuss a wide range of international health issues at a major summit today (May 18th).

The World Health Assembly is set to meet in Geneva in Switzerland, with the session scheduled to last from May 18th until May 22nd.

It is the 62nd time that the session has taken place and it will focus on preparation and access to vaccines for an influenza pandemic.

In addition, the implementation of the International Health Regulations will be discussed, plus the Health Assembly budget, management issues in the World Health Organisation (WHO) and administrative matters.

Strengthening health systems, especially in primary health care, will also be a priority at the summit, as will monitoring the progress and success of the Millennium Development Goals.

A recent meeting between WHO, the United Nations Environment Programme and the Global Environment Facility, reached an agreement on a rejuvenated global effort to combat malaria.
