WHO launches western Pacific health centre
A major new health complex for the western Pacific region has been opened.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched its Collaborating Centre for Community Health Services at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).
This facility is hosted by the university's school of nursing and aims to offer educational opportunities and programmes for nurses in the area, which could help the region safeguard itself against any future pandemics or international health issues.
Professor Timothy Tong, president at the university, said that PolyU is "proud" to be hosting the complex.
He commented: "Our university and the school of nursing will strive to provide the best educational programmes and consultation services for healthcare professionals."
Dr Henk Bekedam, director of health sector development, added that the facility shows how collaboration can help to secure "the health of vulnerable communities".
Last week, it was revealed that a health centre for HIV and Aids has been opened by sex workers in Karnataka.
