WHA calls for urgent action on hepatitis B and C
The World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA) has called on governments to do more for people living with chronic viral hepatitis B and C.
It wants improvements in prevention, diagnosis and treatment for the diseases that affect an estimated 500 million, approximately one in 12 people. The WHA claims that the number of people suffering with hepatitis B or C is ten times the number of people infected with HIV/Aids.
The WHA is asking governments to sign up to a new scheme aimed at combating the diseases, named 12 Asks for 2012. The 12 Asks are a series of commitments from policy makers to recognise the impact of the diseases and the importance of adopting preventative measures.
Charles Gore, president of the WHA, says that the lack of data shows the need for greater surveillance of the two diseases.
"Governments are simply working in the dark and need to do more to ensure chronic viral hepatitis B and C are high up on national and international healthcare agendas," said Mr Gore.
World Hepatitis Day was held on May 19th and the WHA, together with over 200 patient groups around the world, are asking people sign an Am I Number 12 petition to show support.
