Vaccine developed for E. coli strain
A new vaccine designed to tackle a strain of E. Coli that kills millions of people in the developing world has been created.
Michigan State University (MSU) scientists have been behind the research, which is focusing on Enterotoxigenic E. Coli.
Out of all E. Coli diarrheal disease, this strain is responsible for between 60 and 70 per cent, killing between two and three million children in the developing world per year as well as many adults.
A patent for the new vaccine is being applied for by A Mahdi Saeed, professor of epidemiology and infectious disease in MSU's colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Human Medicine.
"This strain of E. Coli is an international health challenge that has a huge impact on humanity," he stated.
"By creating a vaccine, we can save untold lives. The implications are massive."
A grant from the National Institutes of Health helped to fund this new research.
