UNICEF calls for greater efforts to fight HIV in Central America

Central American counties require improved access for children to HIV treatment as well as a greater political commitment to fight the disease, according to the United Nation's children's fund UNICEF.

The announcement came as the organisation launched a report examining the impact of HIV in Central America and emphasised the importance of working towards universal access to HIV education and treatment.

In a statement UNICEF called for improved access to care, assistance and treatment for all children living with HIV, along with an increased commitment to providing preventative and promotional materials from national governments.

Nils Kastberg, UNICEF regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean, said: "It is fundamental for UNICEF to increase the availability of all-encompassing services that prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS from mothers to their children.

"We want all youth to have the right to be born healthy and free from the risk of contracting HIV," he added.

According to figures provided by UNICEF, Central America is the sub-region most affected by HIV/AIDS in Latin America after the Caribbean, with four out of the six countries in the region with the highest rate of HIV infection being found in the area.
