Ugandan Ebola death toll hits 28

The death toll from the continuing outbreak of the Ebola virus in Uganda has risen to 28, it has been confirmed.

Three patients died from the fever in the west of the country yesterday (December 9th), AFP reported, with the latest victims including a health worker.

All of the fatalities occurred in the country's Bundibugyo district, the epicentre of the disease, where over 300 people are currently under observation to prevent the further spread of the virus.

"Since the epidemic broke out, the cumulative cases have risen to 112, including 28 deaths. Three patients died today," Sam Kazinga, Bundibugyo district commissioner, told the website.

Fears over the Ebola outbreak and its handling by medical officials have contributed to violence in some affected areas, AllAfrica.com reported, with a riot forcing the closure of an isolation centre in Kichwamba.

The website also reported claims from the families of those infected with the disease that they are being shunned by their local communities, with traders refusing to accept their money for food.
