Uganda works to prevent swine flu

Steps are being taken in Uganda to ensure that the country does not become the latest place swine flu spreads to.

The government has issued travel alerts that urge people not to make unnecessary trips to locations already affected by the virus.

These destinations included Mexico City, New York, Canada, Spain and Britain.

Dr Sam Zaramba, the director general of health services in Uganda, told Parliament that there was no need to panic over swine flu and preparation to fight the virus is being carried out.

"This outbreak has the potential of spreading to all countries, including Uganda, in a matter of hours through air, water or land travel," New Vision Online quotes Zaramba as saying.

"We are concerned that the virus is already in America and is spreading fast. The situation is worrying."

Feeling weak, having a fever, losing appetite, coughing and having a sore throat are all symptoms of swine flu.

The World Health Organisation has warned that a swine flu pandemic is "imminent".
