Typhoid spreading in Kitwe
Efforts to stop typhoid in Zambia have been stepped up following several new cases in small areas outside the capital city.
The townships of Wusakile and Chamboli Mine have recorded 12 new cases of typhoid in the past two weeks.
This follows a further 67 cases which have been reported in Kitwe since October, the ministry of health has said.
According to the Lusaka Times, health officials will now look to educate locals in the two regions on preventing cholera and dysentery developing on top of typhoid.
The district preparedness committee also confirmed that it will use two trucks previously used on refuse collections to remove rubbish from the area and unblock all sewers lines in the townships.
Health Director for Kitwe Dr Chikafuna Banda said that the latest typhoid cases include two infants and five women who all live in the Wusakile area.
This news follows fears of a cholera outbreak in southern Zambia where two cases have been recorded in Choma so far.
