Study uncovers new HIV genome discoveries

A new study has shown that the Aids and HIV viruses do not affect particular parts of a person's genetic material.

This has been found by scientists at the German Cancer Research Centre and it could help the development of new treatments for the disease.

It had previously been thought that HIV has a preference for specific sites in which gene transcription begins.

However, this latest study has suggested that while this may be the case some of the time, often such sites are not located near the HIV integration areas.

Dr Frank Giordano said: "For the first time we have very precisely defined areas in the human genome where HIV hardly ever integrates."

The researchers were able to come to these conclusions through the analysis of 46,000 known integration sites within HIV-based gene delivery.

Earlier this week, researchers at the Duke University Medical Center suggested that a key part of antibody functions has been overlooked in HIV studies.
