Sex workers open HIV centre

A centre to raise awareness about HIV and Aids has been opened by sex workers in Karnataka.

The regional facility is located in Mysore and it is thought to be the first of its kind in the Asia Pacific.

This is because it will be run entirely by the group of sex workers, who hail from different parts of Karnataka.

Michel Sidibe, executive director for UNAIDS, which has helped with the opening of the centre, commented to the ANI news agency that this is "taking the initiative to solve [the] problem".

He added: "It is about making sure that each of those, who need the help, get it on [a] timely basis. It will also be to eternalise the skills and knowledge which will help the sex workers to change their life."

Earlier this month, it was revealed that more than four million people in low to middle-income nations were receiving treatment for HIV by the end of 2008.
