Scots confused about HIV transmission routes
Almost a third of Scots aren't aware that sex without a condom can result in the transmission of Aids, according to a new survey.
A poll, conducted by the National Aids Trust, has found that 31 per cent of those surveyed failed to identify that unprotected sex between a man and a woman as a way of getting the disease.
A further 35 per cent did not know sex without a condom between two men was also another transmission route.
"The lack of awareness and understanding about HIV in Scotland is worrying," Deborah Jack, chief executive of the National Aids Trust, told the BBC.
"HIV rates in Scotland continue to rise. These results show we cannot afford to be complacent about HIV education and awareness.
"The Scottish government and local authorities must work together to re-invest in public awareness and information about HIV."
A study conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston found that almost 40 per cent of sex-trafficked girls and women from Nepal are carrying the HIV infection.
