Red Ribbon heads into India

A major Aids awareness scheme has entered India.

The Red Ribbon Express sees special trains travel into areas, armed with information on healthcare issues for local residents.

As part of the latest leg of the scheme, ten coaches moved into Palanpur Railway Station over the weekend, having originally set off from Delhi.

RJ Patel, a chair of the Aids prevention unit of the district, said: "We have chalked out a detailed programme. Four special caravans with the information will move in remote villages as well."

The scheme will focus on educating younger Indians about the dangers of HIV and Aids and how they can be prevented.

Each youth visiting the coaches must bring 21 other people with them, in a bid to boost the number of individuals the Red Ribbon Express reaches.

Last week, a new scheme which aimed to improve the provision of Aids medication was backed by UNITAID.

The initiative involved the introduced of a patent pool to help provide treatments for poorer nations.
