Queen praises Ugandan AIDS efforts

The Queen has praised Uganda's efforts to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS during a trip to the African country.

Accompanied by husband Prince Philip, the British monarch visited a clinic for people suffering from the disease, watching a fashion show by children being treated for the disease.

She also met some of the patients worst affected by the virus, in a part of the visit which media were barred from, and shook the hand of an HIV-infected man, Steven Wakado.

Speaking at the Ugandan parliament, the Queen said: "It is difficult sometimes, when the sorrow associated with this disease is so profound, to avoid a sense of despair.

"And yet there are growing numbers of people and organisations whose work gives cause for real hope," she added.

In 2005 there were an estimated 1,000,000 Ugandans living with HIV/AIDS, according to World Health Organization figures, with 870,000 children in the country orphaned by the disease.
