Pill for HIV mouth infection
A new pill has been developed by scientists to tackle the most common mouth infection affecting people with HIV and Aids.
Oral yeast infection could be combated by the new treatment researched at Henry Ford Hospital, which needs to be taken once a day.
The pill has been shown to be as effective and safe as other anti-fungal pills that need to be consumed five times per day.
Between one-third and one-half of HIV patients develop oral yeast infections such as oral candidiasis, while 90 per cent of people with Aids get the ailment.
Jose A Vazquez, lead author of the study, said: "This is an exciting new, convenient way for treating this infection.
"Because the anti-fungal agent stays in the mouth, it provides the same relief as the oral medication but with few or no side effects."
People with many forms of cancer also commonly develop oral candidiasis.
