Phase II Vacc-4x trial results revealed
A new trial has shown that Vacc-4x is able to increase T cells in HIV-infected patients.
The phase II tests for the HIV vaccine were revealed at the annual Global HIV Enterprise conference in Paris.
It showed that this may provide an alternative for the 15 to 20 per cent of people with the disease that are unable to undertake antiretroviral therapy.
Per Bengtsson, senior vice-president of development and chief executive officer for the makers of the vaccine Bionor Immuno, said: "We are very pleased to continue to investigate Vacc-4x's effect, especially its ability to help HIV positive individuals with low CD4 counts, because these people have no effective treatment options."
He added that this is "clearly a group with an unmet medical need".
Vacc-4x is a vaccine made up of synthetic peptides which correspond to the conserved domains of the core HIV-1 p24 capsid protein.
Also at the Paris conference, the full results of a new proposed Aids and HIV vaccine were released.
