Nigerian First Lady calls for maternal health action
The First Lady in Nigeria has called for more action to be taken to improve the rate of maternal mortality in the country.
Hajiya Turai Yar'Adua claimed that the country remains one of the globe's worst locations for newborn, child and maternal mortalities.
She has called for the health care services in Nigeria to be reviewed in order to see how the problem can be decreased.
According to Nigerian newspaper This Day, Ms Turai Yar'Adua stated: "Current records still point at a very uncomfortable health indicators in Nigeria, as adjudged by the high infant, under-five and maternal mortalities, Nigeria being one of the worst in the world.
"Given the seriousness of the issue, I have decided that periodically we have to come together to review our progress, identify the issues and challenges and re-strategise to ensure that no stone is left unturned towards stemming the tide of high maternal mortality in our nation."
She was speaking at a workshop organised by the office of the First Lady and the United Nations Population Fund to promote maternal and child health.
