New training for Mozambique health workers

Health workers in Mozambique are set to receive a boost through a new partnership with the University of Saskatchewan.

The university has received additional funding from the Canadian government to continue its work with the Massinga Health Training Centre in Mozambique.

This is intended to increase the skills of health care workers in the African country, as well as the number of people trained as health employees.

J Oda, minister of international cooperation, commented: "By taking advantage of our experience and expertise in health care, Canada is well positioned to improve the skills of health workers in countries like Mozambique."

MP Brad Trost added: "For developing countries to succeed, they need skilled workers, and, in particular in the case of Mozambique, skilled health workers who are able to bridge the gap between communities and the national health system."

More than 800 people from Mozambique have already completed training at the centre since the scheme began in 2002.
