New report of bird flu death in Indonesia
Indonesia's government has confirmed the death of a four-year-old girl from bird flu, the 89th death in the country from the human form of the disease.
Reports confirmed the girl from Tangerang, west of the capital Jakarta, died after being hospitalised for two days.
The death adds to figures making Indonesia the country worst hit by the human strain of the H5N1 virus, with 110 cases of the disease in total contributing to a case fatality rate of over 80 per cent.
"She had a history of contact with infected poultry. She had contact with four dead chickens in her neighbourhood, according to her family," a government official told Inquirer.net.
Meanwhile, AFP has reported that a young girl on the Indonesian island of Sumatra who recently died was not a victim of bird flu, as had previously been thought.
The World Health Organization recently announced an increase in the projected production of a vaccine against any pandemic of the human strain of bird flu, citing scientific advances and increased manufacturing capacity as reasons for their amended expectations.
