New measles vaccine delivery
A new vaccine delivery method could help people in the developing world fight measles more effectively, new research has shown.
Studies from the University of Colorado and from Aridis Pharmaceuticals have indicated that the main problem with measles vaccines is transporting, storing and keeping them uncontaminated.
The scientists have developed new ways to cope with these issues and deliver safe, less costly treatment.
Dr Robert Sievers, one of the principal investigators at Colorado, noted that hundreds of thousands of children around the globe are still killed by measles, despite vaccines being available.
Aridis Pharmaceuticals researcher Dr Satoshi Ohtake added: "This study offers hope for developing countries that desperately need more stable and efficient vaccination methods.
"This new method could potentially offer safer, more affordable and effective treatments to patients that need them the most."
The results will be presented at the 2009 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Annual Meeting and Exposition.
