New malaria funding for Angola
Angola is set to receive new funding from the US to combat malaria in the country.
The African nation will get 80 per cent of anti-malaria medicines free of charge from the US government.
This announcement was made at Angola's National Workshop of Control of Malaria in the Community.
Filomeno Fortes, coordinator of the National Programme Against Malaria, said that the country is now aiming to stop malaria deaths by 2014.
She added: "We are also optimistic that, judging from the results obtained over the last two years, until 2012, it will be possible for malaria not to be the main cause of death in the country."
An increased supply of bednets to prevent mosquito bites will be among the uses of the new investment.
Other main sources of funding and medicine to Angola include the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria.
Around three million people are killed by malaria around the globe each year.
