New health centre in Kinshasa

The inauguration of a new health centre in Kinshasa will form part of a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for a leading health authority figure.

Ann M Veneman, the Unicef executive director, will travel to the country from August 25th until August 29th for a range activities aiming to promote health and wellbeing within the country.

She will help open an occupational health centre in Kinshasa at the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital, with the assistance of Congolese basketball star Dikembe Mutombo.

In addition, meetings with government officials, the United Nations and other organisations will be held to discuss maternal health and the protection of children in the nation.

Families in eastern DRC who have been severely affected by the region's humanitarian crisis will also be visited by Ms Veneman. A camp for internally displaced people is another location she will head to.

The last visit by the executive director to the DRC was in February 2006.
