New Aids study in Caribbean

A new study aiming to assess a wide range of areas affected by Aids is set to begin in the Caribbean.

The Ministry of Health and Human Services in Cayman has welcomed Dr Jeff Cumberworth, Aids consultant with the UK Department for International Development, to oversee the research.

As well as focusing on the medical aspects of Aids, social impacts such as stigma and discrimination will also be evaluated.

In addition, the preventative methods used in the Caribbean will be compared to those used in other areas of the world.

Diane Montoya, chief officer of health in Cayman, said: "We welcome this opportunity for an independent review of our HIV/Aids policies and look forward to implementing any recommendations necessary to improve our policy or legislative framework."

The study is part of a wider project from the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre, which provides support across the region for Aids care workers and patients.
