Mosquito-killing technology developed by US army

The US Army has developed new mosquito-killing technology which could protect millions of people against diseases like Dengue Fever.

Dengue is the third most serious infectious disease faced by the US military, reports have stated.

But mosquito-borne diseases are threatening more people in the world with an increase in what has been dubbed 'airport malaria' - when infected insects travel via aircraft.

As well as Dengue, which does not have a vaccine, mosquitoes can also carry hemorrhagic fever and yellow fever.

US Army researchers have developed Tiger Trap, which kills mosquitoes with insecticide when they try to lay their eggs.

Mosquitoes prefer to breed in dark, damp conditions, causing a rise in diseases during countries' rainy seasons.

The prototype trap has been tested by the US Army in Brazil, Peru, Bangladesh and Thailand.

It aims to kill the insect before it bites.

According to the World Health Organization there may be as many as 50 million Dengue Fever cases every year.
