Malaria threatens Bihar flood victims

Malaria is threatening flood victims in Bihar in India with pregnant women and children most at risk, warned an aid agency.

Stagnant pools provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes that carry the virus and other water-borne diseases, according to Care.

The organization says the flood - that happened when the Kosi River burst its banks two weeks ago - is the worst in India in 50 years.

Care has been working with the government to provide relief for thousands of victims who have been left stranded by the floods.

A relief camp is being set up for 5,000 and Care is trying to distribute food and emergency supplies.

Economically the flood has been devastating in the state, destroying paddy and maize crops as well as pulses, vegetables and plantation crops like bananas.

Care India's emergency coordinator Balaji Singh said: "It's crucial that they have access to nourishing food and clean drinking water as soon as possible – pregnant women and small children can't tolerate going this long without food."
