Malaria studies increase in Ghana
There is set to be an increase in the amount of research into disease carried out in Ghana, after a new study area was opened.
Quintiles has opened new facilities in Ghana, which will immediately cater for a new malaria vaccine study in the country.
Nations throughout Western Sub-Saharan Africa are expected to benefit from research at the new centre, with training for new researchers being carried out by Quintiles.
Gillian Corken, chief executive officer of Quintiles Africa, said: "This expansion offers huge potential to reach patients in Sub-Saharan Africa, which has an estimated population of 760 million people.
"Initially the focus will be on diseases such as malaria, TB and HIV. However, we anticipate that as the infrastructure and economies in Africa develop, like many other non-traditional regions before, it will play an increasingly important role in recruiting patients for many other therapeutic areas, such as oncology and cardiovascular."
More than 16,000 patients from seven Sub-Saharan countries are being targeted for the malaria study.
