Malaria cases fall in Solomon Islands and Vanuatu
There has been a fall in the number of people with malaria in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, according to a source.
Out of every 1,000, 82 people in the Solomon Islands suffered from the disease last year, which is a decrease from 152 in 2006, Radio New Zealand reports.
Dr Thierry Jubeau, public health programme manager for the countries, commented that the nations are now looking to implement a scheme to help eradicate malaria.
He explained to the news provider that this would take three stages and would begin in one area of the Solomons initially.
Dr Jubeau said: "Extensive coverage of mosquito nets, scaling up the diagnostic coverage and access to the treatment, and strengthening surveillance. These are the three pillars of elimination."
Earlier this week, it was revealed that a Phase I study into new malaria treatment has been completed, with further trials into this set to follow.
