Libya hires Rentokil to tackle rats

Libya has employed pest control company Rentokil to tackle its rat problem, amid fears of disease caused by the rodents.

Authorities in the north African country are concerned that rat infestations could lead to illnesses such as salmonella typherium, eosinophilic meningitis and rat bite fever.

Additionally, Rentokil hopes to tackle leishmaniasis, a disease which can cause skin ulcers and even death.

Leishmaniasis is transmitted by sand flies, which are carried by sand rats.

The £24 million contract will see 32 specialists tackle the vermin over three years.

Richard Jones, Rentokil's manager in Libya, said that the rat problem was "beginning to have an impact on public health".

He added that the local populace had been welcoming, with many keen to assist in the removal of the rats.

"It's been great to see how enthusiastic the public are. They are obviously keen to remedy the pest problem, and are eager to help," Mr Jones said.
