IPU calls for G20 help

Some of the world's financial superpowers have been called on to help developing countries in their fight against HIV and Aids, according to a source.

Theo-Ben Gurirab, president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), commented at its conference that the G20 nations should provide "urgent financial assistance" for the cause, reports thisdayonline.com.

He said: "The international financial institutions and the G20 are encouraged to provide urgent financial assistance to developing countries to enable their health system cope with the effect of the pandemic and limit its spread."

Mr Gurirab, speaking at the body's conference in Switzerland, added that additional help was required in developing countries to stem the spread of HIV and Aids, the source states.

This news comes shortly after Nigeria signed a Global Fund Grant worth $669.39 million (£403 million).

The funding comes as part of the round eight grant which aims to help the country in its fight against diseases such as HIV, Aids and malaria.
