IKEA gives light to developing world
A new partnership between IKEA and Unicef will see the lives of children in the developing world brightened up.
From this month onwards, for every SUNNAN solar powered lamp sold by IKEA in stores worldwide, the company will give one lamp to Unicef.
These lamps, which are especially sturdy and designed to work in all conditions, will then be flown by Unicef to children around the globe.
The first of these shipments will be sent to remote villages in Pakistan, where children living in camps will be given the chance to play and study and receive treatment after dark despite having no electricity.
Marianne Barner, head of IKEA Social Initiative, said: "Millions of children can't draw, write or read after sunset, limiting their horizons and possibly their futures.
"We hope our lamps are a small but important contribution to improving the lives of children in developing countries."
Since the IKEA Social Initiative began in 2005, its main mission has been to improve the lives and rights of children in the developing world.
