Girl dies of falciferum

A rare strand of malaria has been pinpointed as the cause of death for a child in Surat.

The five-year-old girl died after contracting falciferum.

This is a rare form of malaria which affects the brain.

The girl, named only as Saini, was admitted to hospital due to the condition last week.

She was one of seven children receiving treatment for the disease at the same medical centre.

All seven of the children taken to hospital with falciferum symptoms are aged five or under.

Among the symptoms displayed by the children are nausea and a high fever.

The other six youngsters admitted to hospital with suspected cases of falciferum are said to be in a stable condition.

Last week, two Nigerian spiritual and religious leaders joined the country's fight against malaria.

John Onaiyekan, head of Nigeria's Christian Association, and Sa'ad Abubakar, the nation's spiritual leader of Muslims and Sultan of Sokoto, gave their backing to the scheme.
