Gates funds chewing gum for malaria

Bill Gates has invested in researchers searching for new ways to fight malaria.

The Microsoft billionaire has handed $100,000 (£62,000) to experts.

Among the potential solutions that this money could be spent on are chewing gum and chocolate.

The gum, which is the brainchild of UCLA doctoral candidate Andrew Fund, would be used as a detector for the disease by using saliva, negating the need for blood to be taken.

Meanwhile, a liquid chocolate medication is also being developed.

The money, which will be delivered through a five-year grant, is being donated as part of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which gives funding to charitable causes.

Elsewhere, TV star Ricky Gervais has launched a new range of gift cards featuring his Flanimal characters in aid of Oxfam, the Press Association reports.

The comedian and actor told the source that the money raised could help the prevention of HIV and Aids.
