Full Aids vaccine data released
Full data compiled from recent Aids vaccine tests have shown that its results are not as strong as first suggested.
Recent studies by US Army and Thailand scientists were detailed in full yesterday (October 20th) at a major conference in Paris and have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
These revealed that the vaccine may partially safeguard people against Aids, however, it did not protect those at high risk of HIV.
It was also suggested that the effects of the medication could weaken after the first year.
Nelson Michael, of the HIV research programme at the US Military, told Agence France Presse: "From a scientific standpoint, it's definitely a breakthrough. But this is definitely not a public-health breakthrough."
Last month, it was claimed that the three-year study, which involved more than 16,000 volunteers, had shown that participants receiving the vaccine had a 31.2 per cent decrease in the risk of HIV infection.
