Free concert to tackle HIV/Aids in Ukraine

Rock band Queen and Paul Rodgers will spearhead the start of an HIV/Aids campaign in Ukraine.

Last month UNAIDS released a study of 110,000 newly-infected people in Eastern and Central Europe.

Almost 90 per cent live in Russia or Ukraine, with the majority intravenous drug users, sex workers or their partners, according to a report by AFP.

The lead singer of Queen Freddy Mercury died of Aids in 1991.

Queen and new frontman Rodgers will perform a free concert in Freedom Square in Kharhov on September 12th, a week after Mercury's birthday, to support the work of the Ukrainian ANTIAIDS Foundation.

Queen has their own HIV/Aids charity, The Mercury Phoenix Trust.

During their visit they will lead a press conference in Kyiv and talk to students about efforts to tackle the virus.

The concert will be aired on national television before Ukraine launches On The Edge, a five-year campaign aimed at tackling HIV/Aids in the country.
