Former president targets malaria

Jimmy Carter, the former president of the US, has travelled to the Caribbean in an effort to raise awareness of the fight against malaria.

The statesmen has visited political leaders, malaria sufferers and health workers in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

A pilot project to eradicate malaria in the countries is being run by the Carter Center, which is currently operating in both Ouanaminthe and Dajabon.

However, Carter is confident that governments and other non-profit health groups will help to fund efforts to stop the spread of malaria, the Associated Press reports.

He told the news provider: "One of the most important developments has been the new cooperation between the two countries.

"And for the first time in history, they are targeting the complete elimination of the disease instead of just treating sick people. A tiny bit of money can completely eradicate these diseases."

Lymphatic filariasis, another disease carried by mosquitoes, is being targeted by the campaign as well.
