Football used to raise HIV understanding

Football has been used to raise awareness and understanding of HIV in Zimbabwe.

A decision by a group of women with the infection to form a football team and attempt to show their strength is the subject of a new documentary entitled The Positive Ladies Soccer Club.

The film shows the stigma attached to HIV in Zimbabwe and the obstacles that the women face each day.

As the team followed their dream of proving that people with HIV are as capable as those without the infection, a unifying message is delivered through the documentary.

Janet Mpalume, one of the women featured in the film, said: "Playing soccer makes me feel like I am somebody. Somebody who is seen amongst others. Now people can see that I am here."

While football has been used to raise awareness of HIV, music was recently selected as a way to aid the fight against malaria.

The Indie Rocks! charity album is now on sale, with money raised going towards sending nets to Africa.
