Experts give tips on avoiding malaria
Experts on malaria have offered tips to people who may be particularly at risk of contracting the disease.
As well as people living in the developing world, those who go on more adventurous holidays could be exposed to malaria, according to Malaria Awareness.
It noted that it is always vital to ensure that antimalarial drugs are taken and courses of medicine are completed if prescribed.
In addition, bed nets and sensible, covered clothing could help to make sure that the likelihood of developing malaria is lower.
Jo Yirrell, ambassador for Malaria Awareness, said: "There are some really basic rules. Use any spray that has at least 50 per cent DEET in it. Use a bed net and cover up from dawn to dusk."
She added that by taking these simple precautions "you are probably going to be absolutely fine".
It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to contract malaria, including severe forms such as Plasmodium falciparum.
