Drug "successful" against TB/HIV
The so-called "deadly duo" of tuberculosis (TB) and HIV could be tackled with immunomodulator Immunoxel, according to a new study from the drug's developer Ekomed LLC.
Patients with both HIV and TB have typically suffered as drugs to treat each disease have been found to be ineffective when the other virus is present.
This problem is being exacerbated by new TB cases trebling in number in countries with large incidences of HIV, Ekomed explained.
However, new research from the firm, published in the July issue of Immunotherapy, suggested that the company's Immunoxel has a "high cure rate" for individuals with both diseases.
"Today, TB is a global emergency that when combined with HIV - the two diseases represent an almost impossible to treat lethal condition," said Ekomed director Volodymyr Pylypchuk.
"We are extremely satisfied to see that our Immunoxel can be successful against the so-called 'deadly duo'."
Mr Pylypchuk added that his company is currently "working closely" with Stirling Products to bring the new drug to market.
