Dengue fever and typhoid warnings in Philippines
Severe rain in the Philippines has led to a new warning against water-borne disease such as typhoid and dengue fever.
The country's department of health (DOH) has issued advice to residents of the Alkan province in Panay due to recent weather conditions.
Dr Myrtle Pelayo, the DOH's provincial representative has said that there is an increased risk of the two diseases as heavy rain and flooding remain a concern.
Floods could lead to stagnant drinking water, while wading through flood water could leave residents open to leptospirosis.
The damp conditions provide perfect breeding conditions for mosquitoes, with residents advised to remain vigilant when leaving outdoor containers and storage pots uncovered.
Speaking to the Philippine Information Agency, Dr Pelayo warned that babies and children under the age of one will need additional care at this time of year.
"Feed them well with nutritious and well-prepared food, and give them warm clothing to protect them from the cold temperature, to avoid sickness," she said.
