Chronic care patients need attention in Ethiopia

There is an urgent need for more attention to be paid to chronic care patients in Ethiopia, a study has revealed.

Experts led by Yibeltal Assefa at the National HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office in Addis Ababa have also found that increasing the scope of antiretroviral treatment (ART) in the country is proving to be challenging.

Writing in the Public Library of Science Medicine magazine, the researchers suggested that great leaps forward have been made in expanding access to ART, as well as counselling and testing for HIV.

However, chronic care patients are not receiving the required treatment in Ethiopia, with many physicians leaving the public sector decreasing the standards of care.

Moving tasks to health extension workers and health officers has led to a greater degree of success in tackling AIDS, but more needs to be done in other areas, the researchers concluded.

An event called Right to Play, which promotes education in young people, has been in Ethiopia this week, All Africa reports.
