Cholera epidemic strikes again in Uganda

An ongoing cholera outbreak in the north of Uganda has claimed the lives of nine people, according to reports.

Some 65 cases, resulting in five deaths, have so far been registered in the northern district of Yumbe, with 331 infected and four dead in north-western Uganda's Nebbi district, Xinhua reported.

Medical authorities in the area have blamed a lack of clean water and adequate sanitation facilities for the outbreak, which represents the third occurrence of the disease in Uganda's north so far this year.

"There is a problem of water and household sanitation in the lower belt areas where latrine coverage is very low. This means people use the bushes," district health officer, Alfred Yayi, told the website.

As well as dealing with the cholera outbreak, ABC News recently reported that Ugandan authorities are also dealing with outbreaks of Ebola, plague, meningitis and hepatitis.

According to the country's health ministry, the latest outbreak of the Ebola virus has now caused 30 deaths in the Bundibugyo district.
