Child vaccination scheme in South Africa

A new child vaccination scheme has been launched in South Africa by health authorities.

The doctor who has been at the forefront of changes made to the country's health services has introduced the new campaign.

Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi has brought in the scheme to provide vitamins and vaccinations to three million children across the nation over the next fortnight.

The Associated Press reported that temporary clinics are in operation to carry out the vaccinations, while health staff are going from door to door to raise interest in the project.

Dr Motsoaledi told the news provider that "it is of concern to us that our under-five children are still dying from preventable diseases".

He has previously focused on tackling HIV in South Africa and has criticised the previous health regime for its handling of the virus.

The new vaccination scheme is expected to combat problems such as measles, diarrhoea and pneumonia.
