Cambodian survives bird flu

A 19-year-old Cambodian man has survived the potentially-fatal H5N1 bird flu strain, according to a local health official.

The man had contracted the virus after consuming infected poultry, deputy director of the communicable disease control department Ly Sovann told Reuters.

He was diagnosed with Institut Pasteur in Cambodia inside the National Influenza Centre on December 11th.

Government officials began culling poultry near the capital last week and have banned the transportation of birds from the province of Kandal, where the latest victim was from, 50km south of Phnom Penh.

The man was discharged from a hospital in the capital "safe and sound" after ten days of treatment, the news portal was told.

He is the only person to have survived the disease in Cambodia, which has reported seven deaths since 2005.

Indonesia has the worst record of bird flu with the World Health Organization with 137 cases and 112 fatalities.
