Bruni-Sarkozy calls for HIV action
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, wife of French president Nicolas Sarkozy, has used last week's G8 summit in Italy to call for further action by developed nations to help combat HIV/Aids.
Writing in the Guardian, Ms Bruni-Sarkozy praised G8 leaders for the "revolution in global health" started eight years ago, when the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria was initiated.
However, the French first lady said she wanted to highlight the fact that "millions remain in need while effective interventions exist".
Referring to the G8 leaders, she said: "I hope they will celebrate their achievements by expanding their investment in saving lives and reducing inequities.
"It is not only possible - it is happening, it works, and there is much more still to do."
G8 leaders agreed to increase aid for Africa from $15 billion to $20 billion over three years, while talks on food security and aid for Africa featured heavily in discussions on the final day of the summit.
