Aid to displaced Somalis set to continue
The United Nation's children's fund has announced it will continue bringing relief to over 100,000 people newly displaced by violence in Somalia.
Following an upsurge in conflict in the country's capital Mogadishu, UNICEF has stated it will maintain its presence in the area to help families living in makeshift camps.
In a statement, the organisation pledged to help prevent the spread of disease by contributing to the daily delivery of over three million litres of water and the construction of 1600 latrines.
Christian Balslev-Olsen, UNICEF representative for Somalia, said: "UNICEF is helping to respond to the basic household needs of people who continue to arrive from Mogadishu in their hundreds every day."
"So far, we have provided shelter and non-food items for over 60,000 people and we are supporting the provision of health, water and sanitation services and education," he added.
The United Nations has reported that an estimated half a million people have fled the Somali capital since February 2007, with 172,000 leaving since fighting intensified in late October.
