'Targeted' TB screening needed
The number of people that are estimated to need screenings for TB has increased by 50 per cent, experts have claimed.
According to research presented to the American Thoracic Society's 105th International Conference, a decrease in screenings would have a negative effect.
Lead researcher Benjamin Linas, of Massachusetts General Hospital, stated that screening for TB is "an important method for eliminating the disease".
"This analysis, does not suggest we reduce screening. Indeed, if we did that, we'd likely take a step backward in TB control. The study does suggest, though, that we redirect and focus our screening efforts on those most at risk," he added.
Mr Linas went on to say that current funding should be altered, in order for patients most likely to have latent infections becoming active to move to the head of the queue for screening.
Screenings for TB for patients that have had a gastrectomy, are underweight, have diabetes or end stage renal disease is not currently seen as cost effective.
