'New maternal health approach' needed

A new approach to maternal health is needed to improve the situation for children and mothers in Uganda, an expert has claimed.

Dr Harry Strulovici from the New York University School of Medicine, has called for a "multifactorial" method of dealing with health issues in the country.

This should include looking at health practices across the board, as well as women's empowerment, education, poverty and other cultural factors.

Dr Strulovici, who is clinical assistant professor and director of the international maternal health initiative at the university, told the Independent in Uganda that a holistic approach is the solution to maternal health concerns.

He stated: "The problem is multifactorial and involves not only the social determinants of health.

"The aim is to assist everyone regardless of gender, HIV status, socio-economic status and any other vulnerable group such as sex workers, migrants, immigrants and prison inmates."

A new investment commitment was recently made to Uganda by the Global Fund to Fight Aids, TB and Malaria.
